Coaches Committee Meeting, August 2001
In this issue I'd like to give everyone a recap of the coaches committee meeting. It was attended by committee members, lifters, officials and coaches. From the CC in attendance were Mike Hartle , Pat Anderson, Larry Maile, Jim Hart and myself. Others attending included referee chair Bill Clayton, Masters chair and coach Johnny Graham, and subjuniors head coach Tod Miller just to name a few. We were about 13 total. The first matter to address was the lack of a chair for the committee. Those present nominated me, I accepted and it was approved. The rest of the meeting focused on several items. We discussed the current standards for world team selections. After a lengthy discussion on the topic it was decided that we will continue to follow the current rules as they are stated. We did feel that it was important for us to be involved in the selection of alternates since there is no set criterion for this process with the exception of the Men's Team. At this point in time it is done on formula (Wilkes) for masters and Jrs/Subjrs. Larry mentioned the women use something similar to the Men's. What we will be asking the EC to consider is that we can have input on these individuals based on other factors such as how they will match up at worlds. We will then provide this info to the coach and it will be there final decision. Our input would be handled by two to three members of the coaches committee. We feel that this will help the coaches in deflecting any accusations of bias in team selection and at least provide the organization with a basis for team selection of alternates.
We also discussed a powerlifting coaches certification program. . This will be a voluntary program that will aim at educating both coaches and lifters about the sport. Down the road this may be a requirement for coaching on the world level. It will not be a requirement for anyone one else. We plan on moving forward with this and will keep all of you posted as we go.
We also talked about the need for having team coaches in place prior to their respective world qualifying meet(s). It would be our responsibility to look at developing appropriate time lines for this for each team and then identifying possible coaches or accepting coaches nominations. This will also allow the national team coaches to be present at those qualifying meets. It provides a great opportunity to observe their athletes prior to worlds. We also plan to work on developing some coaching accountability and athlete accountability. The first one would be done initially via a brief written evaluation of the coaches by the athletes (questionnaire form). Larry suggested creating a code of conduct for the athletes to sign and follow. This provides the coaches with some support in cases of misconduct by the athlete.
The meeting was a positive one with a variety of issues being discussed. It seems that the national team coaches will be appreciative of anything we can do to lessen the burden on them. All in all it was a good launching point. As this committee moves forward it will continue to be our goal to provide the lifters and coaches of the organization with information to help them excel in the sport.
