Pre-Meet Report
by Jim Ford

This years JWT is an ecclectic, yet talented group of young lifters. These's a good mix of veteran and talented first timers to IPF style competition. There are some big losses, particularly on the Women's team, due to the new Sub-juniors category and some who finished out there Jr Lifting careers. Loss of Medal candidates here is heavy; Steph McMillian out with injury; Jenn Maile, out due to age; Michelle Amsden, school considerations; Sara Greenup to Track and Field. Here's the rest:

WOMEN'S TEAM
Kim Goff, has made great strides in the last year, especially in the Dl(400+ @ 114 lbs). Look to her for US team BEST LIFTER candidate. Veronica Aquila, first time to IPF Jr Worlds, but has 6 years experience lifting, and has competed in IPF for the Australian Women's team. Nicole Sperbeck, a talented newcomer, brings her considerable Gymnastics ability to powerlifting and has made steady improvement in the sport. Robyn Niederkorn, turning 19, and the only one to make it from HS Nationals, surprised everyone with a 910 total at around 144 bodyweight. Kim Callier, was our No.1 alternate, first to be brought to the roster, because of her great improvement in the last year and a half, is a Collegiate Champion, and can be counted on for a solid performance. Her coach,Wade Hooper, promises she will be in top shape. Julia Loya, last year's Jr World champ, showed at Collegiates she can still bring in the big numbers. Katie Ford, at 19, is the reigning veteran, this being her 4th straight World Team competition. In a tough class, her experince could prove crutial in securing team points. Jessica Watkins, returns from last year, much improved. No one bring more enthusiasm to the platform than the "Squatkins"! Mary Holt is also 19, but brings the right attitude and the LTU know how, that is a winning combination.

MEN'S TEAM:
Our first 3 men are LTU lifters; Micah Kiletico from New Orleans posted qualifying numbers that left him the clear winner of this lightweight slot. The veteran, Trey Cunninghamm, like Ford on Women's team, is a 4-time JR World team member. He went 9/9 at Men's National's and will be ready. Clay Grubbs, who coached with the team last year, easily won his slot this year, and brings a medal caliber Dl with him. Brad Robbins is a solid, improving lifter, who was an alterante who place high last year. This year he won both the 165's & the 181 lb class in qualifing meets. Jason Beck, surprised everyone when he came out of no where to to post some huge numbers. Bumping Tylutki is no easy matter. Nick Tylutki, is a class act, and recently set some Jr American Squat records. PJ Chovanec, last years Jr World Champ, has posted some big numbers lately. He promises even higher, and I've learned to believe PJ when he set his mind up. Tony Arterburn, the pride of the military police at Fort Bragg, is a well rounded lifter, who also has a good chance to medal in the BP. Erik Steiner, one of the strong young men from PA. who trains with former members Steve Mann & Angelo Poulich, came real close to winning the slot outright, but moves up from alternate to the roster at 242 lb. Henry Thomason @ 125kg class brings big numbers and vows a 900+lb squat. Randall Harris, has big numbers in all three lifts, over 900kg total, was our first alternate to be brought up. Emilio Saldierna, who worked so hard he put 50+ pounds on his total in just months, is our traveling alternate, and will be ready if we need him.

We have the largest, most competent coaching staff ever assembled for a JWT. Sandra Perron,Mike O'Donnel,Greg Simmons,Wade Hooper, Larry Maile and Jim Ford. PJ Couvillin will be our Int.Ref and share referee'ing duties along with Larry Maile.

In all, our Team USA traveling group will be over 40; arriving in Sofia, on the 10th of September, and we will expect to see really heavy lifting talent from the close by former Soviet block nations. Sofia, is just a day or two's ride by train from, Moscow, Ukraine, Poland, Kazakstan and many of the other powerhouse provinces. I'm sure many Jr World Records will fall at this meet.

Special thanks to our generous sponsors for all their help. We could'nt have pulled our All-American team together without thier abundant help. I would encourage all readers to spend your powerlifting dollars with companies who donate to our sport.

I also want to thank everyone else who helped to get our lifters to this point. Personal coaches, nutritionist, college programs, qualifying meet promoters, USAPL EC, National Office, Coaches Comittee, Committee Chairs, volunteers, training partners, and PARENTS. Thanks for your hard work and dedication to our sport. This is the best we have to offer, it's "Americas Team".

Next report, will be from Sophia.........
