Technical Tips -- Footwear

As the Technical Secretary for several major USAPL National and IPF International Championships over the past year, I have noticed and detected during some equipment checks, lifters and coaches encountering problems with having their respective footwear passed by the referees. In this issue of Powerlines, I shall discuss and provide to you the correct footgear allowed for all USAPL and IPF International Championships.
As is stands now, the IPF rules currently state the following regarding shoes (Page 11/12):
http://www.powerlifting-ipf.com/ipf_technical_rulebook.htm

    Shoes or boots
Lifting shoes and/or boots shall be worn.
    (a) Shoes shall be taken to include only Sports Shoes/Sports Boots; Weightlifting, Powerlifting Boots or Dead Lift slippers, to be worn by lifters at World Championships.
The above is referring to indoor sports e.g. wrestling/basketball. Hiking boots do not fall into this category
    (b) Shoes with metal spikes or cleats are not permitted.
    (c) No part of the underside shall be higher than 5 cm.
    (d) The underside must be uniform on both sides.
    (e) Loose inner soles that are not part of the manufactured shoe shall be limited to one-centimeter thickness.

The examples below (Illustration A, B, C & D) indicate examples of shoes that are acceptable according to the rules:
