TUEC (Therapeutic Use Exemption Committee)

Report: September, 2004

Mark W. Rodacker, MD PhD Chairman

The TUEC was formed several months ago to comply with WADA requirements to report any substances (of which there are thousands) on the banned list for which the athlete may be granted an exemption to compete while using the substance at the direction of his/her physician. Some substances such as anabolic steroids or growth hormone, etc. are absolutely banned and, even for legitimate replacement needs, the athlete cannot be granted exemption. Other substances, such as asthma medications, joint corticosteroid injection for arthritis/pain, or topical corticosteroids for contact dermatitis (e.g., poison ivy), are eligible for exemption upon committee review of the properly submitted TUE form (see internet URL below) with the supportive documentation from the lifter's doctor. For asthma and joint injections, the abbreviated TUE form may be used and for other requests, the complete form should be submitted.

So far, the committee has evaluated approximately 20 TUE requests (most have passed). The vast majority of requests have been for asthma medications and joint injection exemption. The committee has worked well together and works with a consensus voting system. Once the request form has been voted on, results and documentation are kept on file with the national office (and I keep a record also). The IPF is advised of athletes to be aware of in this regard.

The TUEC is currently in need of one new member, as one recently resigned. If anyone is interested (best to have had at least a year or two USAPL experience), please contact Dr. Maile or myself.

Thank you. Be strong and best of luck on and off the platform.
