(Left to Right - Fred Glass, Nick Theordorou, George Hummel, and current USAPL president - Dr. Larry Maile)
At the 2004 USAPL American Open Powerlifting Championships that was held on December 11 & 12, 2005, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania witnessed two (2) of the founders of the ADFPA-USAPL, Nick Theordorou and George Hummel renew their competitive rivalry from years past. For me, as well as others, it was a real pleasure to see and have both Nick and George attend and lift at this year's championship. This provided an opportunity for the lifters from today's [modern era] to meet two of the four founding fathers of the original drug-free movement that teamed with Brother Bennett to begin the American Drug-free Powerlifting Federation (ADFPA), now known as USA Powerlifting (USAPL).
Overall, this occasion provided everyone with a fantastic opportunity to meet and speak to those that had the vision and foresight to establish an organization that specifically focused on the concept of "drug-free powerlifting" with an emphasis of Mens Sana in Corpore Sana - A Sound Mind in a Sound Body, which has now moved from a national phenomenon, to an international standard for all sports to measure themselves against -- A truly magnificent accomplishment. Not to be left out, is the contribution that Fred Glass - one of the early administrators, coaches, referees, and meet directors of the ADFPA and Dr. Larry Maile, who now steers and commands the ship toward USCO/IOC recognition, for their many years of dedication to the organization. Special thanks to Nick, George, Fred, and Dr. Maile for their contribution to the sport of powerlifting and to international sports overall.
