The 2005 University Cup Challenge was held Saturday Nov. 12th, 2005, at Fletcher's House of Power gym. Most of the hotels here in Baton Rouge are still filled to capacity with displaced citizens and releif/rebuilding workers. So much so that many are using their meeting rooms and ballrooms as "baracks"...ergo, we held this year's meet in the parking lot of Fletcher's gym, under a canopy generously lent us by Mike Godawa, father of LSU lifter (and this meets' Best Lifter/Heavy) Travis Godawa.
Pictured is Nat Wood squatting, shows the tent/platform setup. Basically the meet this year was LSU versus UL-Lafayette. LSU won the Men's team and the Women's team this year, taking the Men's team title from ULL after their surprise victory in 2004. The other team competition was for the University Cup, where schools get to pick a roster of 10 lifters of any combination to compete...the winner gets to keep the trophy until the following year...or win it again. The Cup championship went to LSU for the second year in a row. Standout performances were put in by Nick Guttierrez, Travis Godawa, Leigh Arnold and Pam Bartz. Guttierrez (165/Jr/LSU) hit a nice PR squat of 575 on his way to a 1450 total and Best Lifter Light. Travis Godawa (181/So/LSU) also hit a big PR squat of 570, narrowly missing 600. Travis was Best Lifter Heavy. Leigh Arnold (198/So/Nicholls) pushed up a PR bench and held steady in the deads, winning the Female Best Lifter narrowly over freshman Pam Bartz (148/Fr/LSU), who went PR across the board on the day.
